chapters 1 and 2 read

LOOK HOW CUTE HE OR SHE IS!!

I just finished reading the first two chapters in the book Aunt Safiyya and the Monastery by Bahaa' taher. I am really enjoying this book because it talks about the different culture something i know little about. i thought that it was crazy how the Bey abused Harbi, tying him up to the tree and beating him almost to death. I think that it is sad how Aunt Safiyya hates Harbi and wants to kill him now after killing the bey when the bey almost killed Harbi. i also thought that it was sad how Aunt Safiyya was teaching her son how to hit and hurt somthing by using a donkey.

  1. When you talk about how Aunt Safiyya teaches her son how to hit and hurt something by using an animal, it reminds me of how domestic violence can begin...any violence in fact. Relating to domestic violence, a child may see his or her father (for the sake of this situation, I'll go with what's most common) hit their mother several times a day for years. Over time, that child will become accustomed to that kind of treatment. If the child is a boy, he may later treat the women in his life that way. And if the child is a girl, she may allow the men in her life to treat her that way. The point I am trying to make is that seeing violence from a young age teaches children that violence is acceptable and may possibly lead to more violence.
